I’m better at delegating than I realized

I had a few weddings of my own this summer, but mostly I assisted with the weddings of other planner friends. I’ve been in the wedding industry forever, so this, I thought, would be easy. I got three big takeaways out of it:

  1. The word “easy” is now stricken from my vocabulary. Really, I should have known better.

  2. A deeper look at how other planners manage their wedding days, from the back-end out. I got a new perspective on how I can help wedding professionals from a workflow perspective, but I also added and eliminated steps from my own planning process because of it.

  3. I, dear reader, am very good at delegating.

Let me explain #3: There are wedding day tasks that I… don’t excel at finishing quickly, because I personally haven’t done them in a while, like napkin folds, alphabetizing place cards, or lord help me, setting up easels (awkward, awkward!). And, I’m horrible at pinning boutonnieres on groomsmen because I deeply fear mutual injury. This summer I got better at everything but the bouts.

At my own weddings, I delegate that stuff to my assistants, because they’re good at all of it, and my on-site game is better for it. Delegation is about eliminating the tasks that stand in the way of you focusing on what you’re good at. Delegating is about 1. recognizing that you need to do it, and 2. picking the right people - the right tools, since we’re moving into analogy territory - to use.

After this busiest of busy wedding seasons, are you realizing that when it comes to the tasks you do to run your business, the questions you ask are the same: What can I take my hands off of and still get done, or get done even faster and better? What are the options , and how do I pick the best one, whether it’s delegating it to another person, or an online system like Honeybook or Dubsado? If this is where you are, I’m here to tell you that you can get the space you need and time you need to do the things in your business that you love. If the “what” and the “why” are tripping you up, let’s talk - schedule a discovery call with me here.

I’ll talk to you soon,

Elizabeth
