Making Coffee - An Automation Tale

“There's a lot of automation that can happen that isn't a replacement of humans but of mind-numbing behavior.”

-Stewart Butterfield

DING. This is a common misconception about business automation, especially small business automation, that you’re replacing yourself in the process. When what you’re really doing is replacing the work, and the time the work takes.

How many of you have an automatic coffee maker? You know, where you put the coffee in the filter and set the timer for awake o’clock the next morning? It’s your coffee, your timing, all you have to do is push a button. Business automation is like that;

Sending out an inquiry response email - the email you always manually send to move them to the next step, sent immediately after their response. In most cases, you don’t even have to push a button.

Sending a balance invoice - your wording, your pricing, your preferred method of payment. You don’t have to do it, or remember to get it done. You don’t have to do a new one every time, you can use a template, which is automatically filled with the details, and out it goes.

Your coffee, your timing. The work that you would otherwise do to make a pot of coffee is replaced, not you.

Now, that being said, you do have to remember to put the coffee and the water in the pot, set the timer, and push the button! That’s work you can’t replace! The business equivalent is converting all your documents and emails so they can be automated, and deciding on the timing of how and when they get sent out. It’s a one time process with boundless benefits of saving time and making money. Are you feeling the stress and friction of having to manually do the mind-numbing tasks in your business?
